Tips & Hints |
ACID BOIL OVER EFFECT- By adding liquid soap, a sink detergent or shampoo, a foamy sudsy head results, its superb effect for hot acid, a nuclear leak, a chemical spill. Simply add the soap or detergent to water, mix well, then add to steam chips and in second, steam with suds and foam. Also great for something boiling over on the stove.
LASER HITS for a science fiction film, required an impact effect unlike typical bullet hits that have a pyrotechnical look. This was achieved by filling small gelatin capsules with steam chips and inserting them on cue into a hidden water filled reservoir. The capsules were pushed into the water with a thin plexi rod. Powered dry dye was mixed with the steam chips and included in the capsule, it released a color with the steam like pyro smoke, very good looking.
A BOILER HAD TO SPRING STEAM LEAKS at several points, a submarine suffering from a depth charge hit had to have plumbing joints pop and open live steam. Steam chips were placed in metal aerosol spray can caps, their tubing fed water on cue into the metal cups at several different points on the set. The water was shot through the table by using a large disposable plastic veterinary syringe, on the off set end of the tube, simple latex tubing, vinyl hose, etc. will suffice.
AN EXPERIMENT GONE WRONG IN A LAB is dramatically portrayed by boiling over with water/soap mixture.
Steam chips get hot enough to make a fire by pouring a solvent on the steam chips then add a small amount of water to effect a pyrophoric result. Genuine flames spew upward. Be very careful with this effect.
